The Cat Dreamer

Isobelle Carmody is one of Australia’s most prolific science fiction and fantasy writers of today and has written many book collections, like Gateway Trilogy, The Legend of Little Fur, Obernewtyn Chronicles or the Legendsong saga. The author is responsible for other novels, short stories and children’s books as well, leaving entire worlds parallel to our own, filled with incredible adventures and magical stories.

The Cat Dreamer is another fantasy filled novel of Carmody’s that, along with The Red Shoes and Angel Fever form part of the Quentaris Chronicles, a collection of novels and stories made un by several Australian sci-fi writers which share the magical city of Quentaris in all their tales.

In The Cat Dreamer the story begins when a fog descends upon the magical city of Quentaris. Ever since the fog appeared it seems that people of the land have changed in habits, the way they act and especially the way they feel. Quentaris also seems to be plagued by a series of suicide death all of a sudden, which makes no sense for anyone.

The main characters of the book are Igorik and Red, two very different, but very connected twin brothers who are in charge of finding out what is causing this sinister change in the inhabitants of Quentaris. As the plot advances, Igorik dreams one night about a mysterious girl that, in the context of the book, where communication can be held between real life and dream life, is actually a cat.

The real life version of the girl is a cat named Katya, who has followed Igorik home and is also struggling with her own battle of finding a criminal that has plagued her own world before traveling to Quentaris to find him. The Cat Dreamer makes for a very easy and pleasant read for everyone.
